WHY IZ NIGGAS MAD @ RICK ROSS?
Who hasn't heard 'Tupac Back' by Meek Mill, feat. Rick Ross? If you have, you've heard Rick's undeniably audacious hook. I'm not going to get into whether or not it's a good song or a whack track, etc. Regardless of personal opinion, I think simply using "TUPAC BACK" in the hook is outrageous, in and of itself. It's intentionally provocative and the knee-jerk reaction people seem to be having is laughable. Having said that, I've listened to the lyrics a few times and, honestly, I'm not sure what to make of it. Which Tupac is Ross referring to, what metaphor is he invoking?
For those who want to say this song is "disrespectful," there's still the issue of "art for art's sake" or art "in and of itself." Many people are blind to certain, larger truths. These people hear "TUPAC BACK" in the hook and are going to have a knee-jerk reaction, whether positive or negative. Under the umbrella of "art for art's sake," I have to give it up because it was a provocative choice made by the artist and a successful one that has many people responding. In this aspect, it's a statement and it's quintessential to the genre of hip hop that continues to evolve.
Toughen up, kiddos. Younglings today find any and everything to bitch about and find offensive. In any case, the whole idea of ancestors or predecessors "rolling in their graves" has always struck me as trivial. Those people are dead. Now is now. Now is all that matters. In Pac's "now" I'm sure there were plenty of people he drove to "roll in their graves." And?
